Do it! Just do it!

Meet one of the chief procrastinators when it comes to fulfilling dreams of caravanning.  And procrastination is not a new word for our generation.  Many moons ago, Socrates and Aristotle spoke about “akrasia”.  The art of developing reasons to postpone things – in many instances against your own reason and knowing you should not do it.  In considering life as a “billabong gypsy”, many things jumped up:

  • Logical reasonable “excuses” of not finding time for a lifestyle that includes recreation.  Specifically, when children were part of the household and thinking of all competing activities.
  • Financial reasoning and staring at the cold financial stats like a possum in the headlights of an oncoming 4×4.
  • Rationalising a bulging program and trying to add “another item”

There are many more reasons, but you get the drift.  You plan the nice things: hiking trails, scuba diving, camping, and end up doing nothing of this with proving “good and valid reasons” – but jeopardising your dreams.  In the end?  Becoming comfortable being uncomfortable.  But dreams can slip by as one become old.  Putting off and postponing can cost one dearly.

Being confronted with this reality at 65, me and Janna confronted this evil.  Carry on postponing and being comfortable postponing until we are in a high care old age centre …. or bite the bullet AND DO SOMETHING now.

Sometimes, just sometimes you just have to do it.  Full stop.  You saved.  You are relatively secure.  Arguments to the contrary are not valid anymore.  Just do it.  Take the step and take the plunge.  This is the only way to break this dangerous cycle.  Time for action!  It does not mean being irresponsible.  But acting.

Thus, three years ago to tow tug came along.  Not every-one like Jeep Grand Cherokee’s, but I am happy with my 4×4 diesel.  And it can tow.  This was the main reason for considering this car.  And gradually it was paid.  But the next push can earlier this year.  Before we became “comfortable” again.  We took the plunge into the caravan market.  YES!  It happened.

Procrastination can be addressed.  It can be changed.  There are many articles about this.  Have you also done this prior to taking the plunge into adventure?  See the picture which I collected from here on the internet.  Which one are you?
