I am a sixty-plus with more than 30 years of experience in clinical and forensic psychology. I have done this across three countries – South Africa, New Zealand, and currently Australia. Each experience has added to whom I am now. I started my career journey as an ordained minister of a protestant church (Calvinist) but became interested in individual work.
In all three countries, I did some traveling which I have enjoyed immensely. I grew up in central South Africa and were privileged to see many places. I stayed eight years in the Western Cape and, as an extra income became a bus driver over weekends and saw the beauty of a wonderful area. I also ventured to Namibia. In New Zealand, I had the privilege to travel both the North and South Islands. But I regret I could not do this more for various reasons. At a later stage of my life (55 plus), I did my first holiday trip to Europe. For each of the above. we had to budget and save. For each of these, we displayed typical signs of hesitancy. Catastrophising about money and also about what can go wrong. Confidence withheld us from exploring. But nothing is as enriching and fulfilling as to experience meeting people, cultures, and landscapes.
And now …. we are coming into our retirement years realising how much we still want to see. But we are not millionaires. We will need to do it on a budget that fits us. I believe it is possible. I am married to a wonderful wife who shares this interest with me. And with the kids settled and giving us joy we are approaching our retirement. Both of us want to remain “young in spirit”. And we want to explore… Come and join us!
